JIRIDÓN KIDS

We offer unique workshops, residencies, and performances for schools, summer camps, and special events that reinforce standards in the performing arts curriculum.

A workshop is a one-time visit by the artist with the purpose of introducing an art form to the students. A residency is made up of three of more consecutive workshops with the same group of students, resulting in a culminating project or performance. Residencies provide students with a more meaningful experience in the art form.

Summary & Objective

We are a drumming and dance educational program that instructs students in West African performance art by using methods such as story-telling, movement, and musical technique. These programs will be led by teaching artists Joshua Strodtman and Andreina Maldonado, students of drumming master Dr. Djobi Irie Simon from the Ivory Coast. Students will have an opportunity to play authentic West African drums, learn rhythms, dances and songs, and perform for their parents and peers. Students will explore African history through story-telling, music and dance. Students will expand on traditonal arts to create their own original music and dance. Students will take away an understanding of the interconnection between music, dance, and story-telling. Students will take away an appreciation for cooperation, team work, and collaboration.
